Arenal d'en Castell and it's neighbour Son Parc, are quiet resorts in the district of es Mercadal on the dramatic northern coast of Menorca, 12 miles from the capital Mahon and the airport - perhaps 30 minutes by car on rather poor and badly signposted roads. Taxis from the airport cost €30-40. There are buses but they aren't frequent and can be unreliable. Arenal d'en Castell's main attraction is its excellent sandy beach surrounded by scenic horseshoe shaped cliffs. Warm shallow waters make swimming with young children a pleasure and a good variety of water sports are present. Outside of June - August the coast can be windy thanks to the 'Tramuntana' north wind, which may also bring in jellyfish; and the sea outside the bay rough.
