| About Es Mercadal | |
|
Es Mercadal is located in the centre of the island at the foot of Mount Toro (El Toro), the highest mountain on the island. The transfer time from the airport is approximately 70 to 80 minutes. Es Mercadal derives from the Latin word mercatum, meaning "market". The open-air market, which is a major attraction of this town, dates back to 1301, when King James II of Majorca decreed the establishment of a public centre of commerce in Minorca. In mid-July, a traditional festival dedicated to the Catholic Saint Martin is held. This is a good central base for walking enthusiasts and those looking for something other than a beach holiday. However, the resorts around the coast of the island are all within a short drive of Es Mercadal. |
